The Durham Dales Federation is a group of small rural primary schools, formed in September 2023. From November 2025, our schools will join with Butterknowle, Frosterley, and Woodland Primary Schools to form the Durham Dales Partnership.
Staff across all schools work collaboratively to share expertise and to plan and deliver the curriculum. Our subject leaders coordinate their subjects across the federation, ensuring that all pupils receive the same high-quality learning experiences.

St John's Chapel & Wearhead Science in Year 1 & 2 Our young scientists have been busy exploring the human body! They counted different body parts eyes, ears, fingers, toes and carefully recorded their findings in a table. Once their data was collected, they transformed it into a colourful block diagram, showing their results in a clear and creative way. It was wonderful to see the children combining observation, recording, and presentation skills all while learning more about themselves! Great teamwork and fantastic science learning from Year 1 & 2!

Butterknowle Primary Our Early Years class have had great fun experimenting with runs and ramps. They have worked cooperatively to create a ball and water run, problem solving as they go. They have been brilliant at sharing ideas, and spent lots of time exploring what would fit/travel down the run best. They also noticed how the movement of the objects they chose changed when water was added. These open-ended experiences develop our understanding of why things happen and how things work as we create and adapt our ideas.
